Gears of War: E-Day launches October 6 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and it sends the series back to the worst day in its history. The Coalition's prequel drops players into the first hours of Emergence Day, playing a younger Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago as the Locust Horde erupts from beneath the city of Kalona, fourteen years before the original 2006 Gears of War. It is a console exclusive to Xbox, with no PlayStation 5 version planned.

A Prequel Built Around Emergence Day

Most Gears games start after humanity has already dug in. E-Day starts before anyone knows how to fight back. Marcus and Dom are still active-duty soldiers rather than the grizzled veterans of the original trilogy, and the campaign is framed around the chaos of a surprise attack rather than an established war. The official Gears of War site describes the setting as the opening hours of the Locust invasion, with civilians and military alike caught off guard as emergence holes tear open across Sera.

The Coalition built E-Day from the ground up on Unreal Engine 5, and the studio has targeted 4K resolution at 60 frames per second with ray-traced lighting for the campaign, plus modes that push multiplayer up to 120 fps on capable hardware. Early hands-on previews describe heavier, more visceral melee than recent entries, including bayonet charges with the Mark 1 Lancer, a weapon that predates the chainsaw-bayonet players know from the rest of the series.

Release Date and Platforms

E-Day releases globally on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PC through both Steam and the Microsoft Store. Xbox Play Anywhere support means a purchase on one storefront carries over to the other, along with cross-platform play and shared progression. Premium Edition buyers get up to five days of early access, pushing their start date to October 1.

Editions and Pricing

Xbox Game Studios and the official Xbox store page list three purchase options plus a premium collectible bundle:

  • Standard Edition — $69.99, base game at launch
  • Premium Edition — $99.99, includes up to five days of early access, the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack, five seasonal customization packs starting with the Emergence Pack, and 1,000 Iron premium currency
  • Premium Upgrade — $30 for players who already own the Standard Edition and want to add the Premium perks
  • Collector's Edition — $299.99, adds a 15-inch Marcus and Dom diorama statue, replica COG tags, a steelbook case and physical artwork on top of the Premium Edition's digital content

Every pre-order, regardless of edition, unlocks the Exfil Dom character skin and the Exfil weapon skin set for use at launch.

Day One on Xbox Game Pass

E-Day is a day-one Game Pass release, but only on the higher tiers. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers get the Standard Edition included on October 6; Game Pass Standard and the Core tier do not carry the game, so players on those plans will need to buy it separately or upgrade their subscription. Players who access E-Day through Game Pass can still buy the Premium Upgrade and pay only the price difference rather than the full Premium price.

Campaign Co-op and Horde Siege

The campaign supports four-player online co-op and two-player split-screen on consoles, so the full story can be played as a squad rather than solo. Multiplayer adds 4v4 competitive matches alongside Horde Siege, a reworked take on the series' PvE Horde mode that pushes the format to twelve cooperative players defending against escalating Locust waves. It is the biggest version of Horde the series has shipped.

Pro tipIf you're counting on Game Pass for day one access, check your subscription tier before October 6 — Standard and Core don't include E-Day, and a tier upgrade can take a little while to process if you wait until launch morning.

Quick Facts

  • Release date: October 6, 2026 (Premium early access from October 1)
  • Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, Microsoft Store), Xbox Play Anywhere
  • Developer: The Coalition
  • Publisher: Xbox Game Studios
  • Rating: ESRB M for Mature 17+, for blood and gore, intense violence and strong language

E-Day is the sixth mainline Gears release and the first to tell the story of Emergence Day itself rather than reference it after the fact, a gap in the series' timeline that the game's background on Wikipedia lays out in more detail. For PC players deciding where to buy, the Steam store page lists the same three editions as the Xbox storefront, with achievements and Steam Cloud saves alongside Xbox Play Anywhere.
