Pokémon Legends: Z-A: How to Unlock Mega Evolution and Get Your First Mega Stone

Mega Evolution stays locked for the first several hours of Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Here's the exact story trigger, boss fight and stone-hunting steps that unlock it.

Mega Evolution is the headline feature of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but it doesn't show up when you start the game. Lumiose City's wild Pokémon run normally for the first several hours, no Mega Ring on your belt and no purple charge meter on screen. That's by design. The mechanic is gated behind a specific story beat, and once it opens up it changes how every battle in the game plays. Here's exactly when it unlocks, how to get through the fight that hands it to you, and how to start collecting the stones you need to keep using it.

Why Mega Evolution Doesn't Show Up on Day One

Game Freak holds Mega Evolution back on purpose. The early missions are about learning Lumiose City's real-time battle system and building up your first team, and the game wants you comfortable with that before it hands you a mechanic that can flip a losing fight. If you've been exploring Hotel Z's districts and wondering where your Mega Ring is, you haven't missed anything. You need to hit a specific point in the main story first.

Reach Rank V and Clear Main Mission 9

The unlock is tied to Main Mission 9. You need to have reached Rank V in Hotel Z's ranking system before the mission trigger appears. Once you're there, a Zygarde shows up outside Hotel Z and leads you up to a rooftop, where a wild Absol is Mega Evolving on its own, with no trainer controlling it. That's the game's first Rogue Mega Evolution, and it's tied to the same unexplained disturbances that are warping Lumiose City through the rest of the story. AZ arrives mid-scene and offers you his own Lucario, along with his Mega Ring, so the two of you can fight the Absol together and calm it down.

Beat the Rogue Absol to Earn the Mega Ring

Winning that fight is what actually puts the Mega Ring in your hands for good. A few things make it manageable:

  • AZ's Lucario fights alongside you, so you don't need to solo a Mega Evolved opponent with your own underleveled team.
  • Rogue Mega Evolved Pokémon drop extra charge orbs when you land hits, which matters once you reach the next mission and start building your own meter.
  • Finishing the mission rewards you with the Mega Ring permanently and adds the Absol itself to your party once it settles down.

Learn the Charge Meter in Mission 10

Clearing Mission 9 opens Main Mission 10, which walks you through how to actually use what you just picked up. A purple bubble meter appears in the bottom right of the battle screen, and it fills as you land hits on wild or trainer Pokémon. Once it's full, pressing the right stick triggers Mega Evolution on your active Pokémon. The effect runs for roughly a minute before it wears off, the timer pauses if you swap to a different Pokémon mid-battle, and the meter can refill fast enough in a long fight to trigger a second Mega Evolution before it ends. Your Absol comes with its own Absolite, but you'll need to equip it manually in your bag menu before it can Mega Evolve — it isn't attached automatically.

Stock Up on More Mega Stones

The Mega Ring only does half the job. Every Pokémon you want to Mega Evolve needs its own matching stone, and it has to already be at its final evolution stage. The Stone Emporium in Southern Lumiose sells a rotating stock of stones for Poké Dollars, which is the fastest way to gear up a second or third Mega Evolution option once you have spare cash. Mega Shards, picked up from battles and exploration, can be turned in at Quasartico Inc. to add further stones to your collection, and some of the rarer ones, like Floette's, are locked behind postgame content such as the Infinite Z-A Royale rather than sold outright.

Pro tipEquip the Absolite the moment Mission 10 ends. Several players skip past the prompt and then wonder why their new Absol won't Mega Evolve in the next story battle.

Quick Checklist

  1. Reach Rank V in Hotel Z before expecting the Mission 9 trigger to appear.
  2. Follow the Zygarde outside Hotel Z to start the Rogue Mega Absol encounter.
  3. Win the fight with AZ's Lucario to keep the Mega Ring and recruit Absol.
  4. Clear Mission 10 to unlock the charge meter and right-stick activation.
  5. Manually equip Absolite, then visit the Stone Emporium and Quasartico Inc. for more stones.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is rated E10+ by the ESRB and is out now on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, with full details on both versions on the official Nintendo store page. Nintendo has also confirmed the Mega Dimension DLC, which adds even more Mega Evolutions on top of the base roster.
